The middle or inside linebacker who anchors the interior run defense, aligns to the strong side of the front, and fills downhill in the A and B gaps.
The Mike linebacker (middle linebacker in 4-3 and 4-2-5 schemes, or inside linebacker in 3-4 schemes) is the central anchor of the defense's second level. Positioned 4 to 5 yards off the ball over the center or strong guard, the Mike typically aligns to the strong side of the offensive formation (toward the tight end or passing strength).
While the Will linebacker is built for weakside speed and kept clean to flow in space, the Mike is typically a heavier, more physical interior defender built to take on downhill lead blockers and double-teams directly in the box:
