Mike Linebacker

The Mike linebacker (middle linebacker in 4-3 and 4-2-5 schemes, or inside linebacker in 3-4 schemes) is the central anchor of the defense's second level. Positioned 4 to 5 yards off the ball over the center or strong guard, the Mike typically aligns to the strong side of the offensive formation (toward the tight end or passing strength).

While the Will linebacker is built for weakside speed and kept clean to flow in space, the Mike is typically a heavier, more physical interior defender built to take on downhill lead blockers and double-teams directly in the box:

Interior Run Fits

Fills downhill into the open A-gap or B-gap on inside runs like Inside Zone, ISO, and Power, meeting lead fullbacks and pulling guards in the hole.

Underneath Pass Coverage

In zone coverages (like Cover 3, Quarters, or Cover 2), the Mike drops into the hook-to-curl or middle-hole zone, rerouting inside crossers and taking away shallow dig routes. In man coverage, the Mike typically matches up with the running back out of the backfield.

Front & Alignment Checks

The Mike is often tasked with diagnosing the offensive formation, calling defensive front adjustments, and communicating coverage checks to the front seven (though some systems assign signal-calling duties to a safety).
