press quarters

Defense

also: press quarters coverage · quarters with press corners

Quarters with the corners pressing the outside receivers, which lets the safeties play more aggressively toward the run.

Defense

press quarters, the coverage

A quarters shell where the corners align tight on the outside receivers and disrupt them at the line rather than dropping. Because the corner is taking the vertical himself, the safety behind him is freed from helping over the top and can commit downhill, which effectively adds a defender to the run fit without changing the number of defensive backs on the field.

By level

The binding constraint is corner play, not scheme: a corner who cannot handle a receiver alone turns the aggressive safety into a liability rather than an asset.
