An offensive perimeter run-blocking tag where a lead fullback or H-back bypasses interior defenders to block the strong safety or force player in the alley.

Back On Strong Safety (commonly abbreviated as BOSS) is an offensive blocking tag used on perimeter runs such as sweeps, outside zone, and power from 21 and 22 personnel or H-back sets.

Instead of fitting on an interior linebacker inside the tackle box, the lead fullback or H-back tracks directly outside into the alley to engage the strong safety or secondary force defender. By dedicating a backfield blocker to the widest defensive threat, the offensive line can execute secure down-blocks and double-teams on the defensive end and play-side linebackers without needing a tackle or tight end to reach-block in space.

It belongs to the family of backfield isolation blocking tags, alongside BOB (Back On Backer), BOM (Back On Mike), and BOW (Back On Will).
