Boss Front

Defense

also: BOSS · Bigs On Same Side · Load front · overload front

A 3rd-down defensive overload front that aligns both interior defensive tackles to the same side of the center to stress 5-man pass protections and isolate edge rushers.

Boss front alignment with the big defensive linemen (E, T, N) overloaded to the left of the center and mugged linebackers (M, J) threatening the line of scrimmage on the right.
Boss front (Bigs On Same Side): The defensive end (E), 3-technique tackle (T), and nose (N) overload the left side of the center, while the Mike (M) and Jack (J) mug the line of scrimmage on the right to present a five-man pressure look.

The Boss Front (an acronym for Bigs On Same Side, also known as a Load front) is a specialized passing-down and 3rd-down front. While base defensive fronts balance interior defensive linemen evenly across both A and B gaps to defend the run, the Boss front shifts both interior defensive tackles ('the bigs') to the same side of the center.

The alignment forces the offense into a major 5-man half-slide protection dilemma:

If the Center slides toward the Bigs
The offense commits three interior blockers to the overload, leaving the defense's premier edge rusher isolated in a pure 1-on-1 matchup on the backside with wide grass and no help.
If the Center slides away from the Bigs
The overload side features three defensive linemen rushing against only two offensive linemen (guard and tackle), generating immediate interior penetration directly in the quarterback's face.

Defenses also use the 5-man line presentation of the Boss front with mugged linebackers to disguise 4-man simulated pressures ('creepers'), where one of the showing rushers drops into underneath zone coverage while an unblocked rusher loops through the opposite gap.
