belly

Offense

also: belly series · down · belly G

A Wing-T series and a fullback run, still live in Wing-T rooms and largely gone elsewhere. Frequently confused with trap, which is a different play in a different series.

Offense

belly, the play and series

A fullback run built on down blocking rather than on a trap, and the base of its own series in a Wing-T install. It is often called Down or Belly G depending on the program, which is itself part of why it confuses people.

The name comes from the ride: the quarterback puts the ball in the fullback's belly and rides him before deciding to leave it or take it, which in some versions makes it a read rather than a handoff.

A note on how the term is used

Trap and belly are different plays and get blurred constantly because both are fullback runs. The separation, verified rather than assumed: trap has the backside guard pulling to kick out and lives in the buck series, while belly has no pulling trap block, a different blocking scheme, a different point of attack, and its own series. A Wing-T source describes the fullback running all three of the family's best plays, which settles that they are separate calls.

By level

Mostly a Wing-T room word now. A coach who has only worked in spread offenses may never have heard it, which is precisely why it is worth an entry rather than being assumed known.
