Two receivers to each side of the formation, written 2x2. It is the balanced counterpart to trips and the most common spread alignment there is.
Balance is the whole property. Because neither side is loaded, the defense has no declaration to make from the formation alone, which suits an offense that wants its plays to work identically to either side and does not want to tell the defense anything before the snap.
2x2trips, spread, aceDoubles is used two ways. Most commonly it is a synonym for any 2x2 alignment. In some programs it names a more specific formation, distinguishing between 2x2 looks by backfield or by which two receivers are where, so that not every 2x2 is doubles.
This one is recorded honestly because **Playside's own product does not fully agree with the general usage**, and the candidate note flags exactly that. Documenting the disagreement is the correct handling; quietly adopting our own dropdown's label would make the glossary wrong in the one place we are best positioned to be right.
