Gap-on-Down

Offense

also: GOD · gap on down

A direct line-of-scrimmage blocking rule prioritizing inside gap, head-up defender, or down-blocking inside, with no second-level release to linebackers.

Diagram of Gap-On-Down blocking scheme showing the playside tackle base-blocks the defensive end on his outside shoulder while the pulling guard wraps around into the alley and hits the pursuing Mike linebacker.
Gap-On-Down (GOD) blocking on Power: The playside tackle base-blocks the defensive end on his outside shoulder under the 'On' rule. With no second-level climb assigned to the tackle, the Mike linebacker pursues outside toward the alley, where the pulling backside guard wraps around the tackle's block to hit him and clear a path for the running back.

A direct, first-level man and gap blocking rule used in downhill dive, base, and option schemes. Unlike zone schemes that rely on covered and uncovered rules to climb to linebackers, GOD is a rigid line-of-scrimmage rule that never sends an offensive lineman to the second level. Linemen check assignments in strict priority:

Gap
Block anyone penetrating your inside gap. This includes inside-shade defenders (such as a 2i or 4i) threatening penetration.
On
If your inside gap is empty, base-block any defender on your frame, whether head-up or aligned on your outside shoulder.
Down
If nobody is in your gap or on your frame, block down inside on the defender aligned over the teammate inside you.

Why 'On' includes an outside shade: In GOD, there is no pulling guard assigned to kick out the edge by default. On direct downhill runs like Dive, leaving an outside-shade defender (such as a 5-technique defensive end) unblocked would surrender an instant tackle for loss. Because the inside shade is already accounted for by the Gap rule, 'On' captures anyone head-up or shaded to your outside shoulder.

GOD is a man and gap rule, not a zone scheme: Zone blocking uses covered and uncovered designations with synchronized lateral tracks, allowing uncovered linemen to combo and climb to second-level linebackers based on defensive flow. GOD assigns no combo climbs and has no zone tracks; every lineman locks directly onto a first-level defender.

How GOD alters pulling schemes like Power: In traditional Gap-Down-Backer (GDB), the playside tackle skips a head-up or outside-shade edge defender so the pulling guard can kick him out, freeing the tackle to climb to the linebacker. When GOD is used on Power, the tackle base-blocks the edge defender on his outside shoulder under the 'On' rule. With no tackle climbing inside, the Mike linebacker pursues outside over the top, forcing the pulling backside guard to wrap around the tackle's base block into the alley to meet him.

How each lineman executes the rule on Power:

Playside Tackle (RT)
On rule. Checks inside B-gap (empty), finds the defensive end aligned on his outside shoulder, and base-blocks him under the 'On' rule instead of releasing inside to the second level.
Playside Guard (RG)
On rule. Checks inside A-gap (empty) and base-blocks the 2-technique DT aligned head up on him under 'On'.
Center (C)
Down rule. Down-blocks on the 1-technique Nose aligned in the backside A-gap.
Backside Guard (LG)
Pull and wrap assignment. Pulls flat across the formation, wraps around the tackle's base block into the outside alley, and meets the pursuing Mike linebacker to hit him on the perimeter.
Backside Tackle (LT)
Step-and-hinge assignment. Steps inside to cut off B-gap pursuit and hinges backside.

Second-Level Flow and Ball Carrier: Because the tackle blocked 'On' rather than climbing to the 'Backer', the Mike linebacker pursues outside over the top. The pulling backside guard wraps into the alley to hit him, and the running back follows the guard's block into the perimeter alley.

A note on how the term is used

GOD is effective for direct dive and option plays where linemen lock onto first-level defenders immediately. It is fundamentally distinct from zone blocking: GOD uses no covered/uncovered combo climbs and keeps all five linemen on the line of scrimmage.
