Conflict Defender

Offense

also: conflict player · conflict read · RPO conflict defender · dual-read defender

A specialized type of read defender with dual run-fit and pass-coverage responsibilities who is put in post-snap conflict on Run-Pass Options (RPOs).

A conflict defender (or conflict player) is a specialized type of read defender targeted on modern Run-Pass Options (RPOs). While traditional option read defenders (like the dive key and pitch key) are unblocked frontline or perimeter players choosing between two run options, a conflict defender is a second-level defender forced to choose between two entirely different phases of football: fitting the run versus defending the pass.

Most commonly an off-ball linebacker (like the Will linebacker) or an overhang safety/nickel, the conflict defender carries dual responsibilities on the same snap. The offense leaves him unblocked and reads his initial movement:

Trigger Downhill (Pass)
If the conflict defender steps up into his run fit to stop an inside run (like Inside Zone), the quarterback pulls the ball and throws immediately into the pass window vacated behind him (such as a slant, glance, or pop pass).
Hang in Coverage (Run)
If the conflict defender pedals, expands, or holds his depth to protect against the pass, the quarterback hands the ball off to the running back, attacking a box that is now down a run-fit defender.
