Zone Read removes a defender without blocking him. The line runs zone, the quarterback rides the back through the mesh, and the unblocked defender decides who carries the ball. Close on the back and the quarterback keeps; stay wide for the quarterback and the back gets it.

Spread Option

Zone Read: Inside Zone Read from shotgun 2x2. The line blocks zone left and leaves the backside end unblocked. Both live paths are drawn because the end's reaction decides whether R gets the ball or Q keeps it.
